I know which places serve the best coffee, but can I only really appreciate a great cup of coffee because I have had plenty of bad cups in the past ?

It’s an interesting thought - does our appreciation of something depend on having something worse to compare it to?

Were the last two early mornings beautiful because of the clarity of the sky, or were they beautiful because early mornings had been dark and grey for too many days before ?

The answer, of course, is that it can be both - so we can feel really happy now because we have felt real sadness in the past, but then again, we can just be happy because what we have now is pretty good…
